ANALYSIS OF THE ARTICLE Socio-environmental conflicts over water in La Guajira, Danilo Urrea / Inés Calvo, Colombia, September 12, 2014. In our country mining extraction is a source of income that leaves considerable resources to the state, something that has brought economic benefits to the Colombian population; but behind this has also generated social, demographic and environmental damage to the populations where the extraction of minerals such as coal, oil and others is carried out. It is in the departments of Cesar and Guajira where the effects are more direct. Causes -The governments of Presidents Álvaro Uribe and Juan Manuel Santos have handed over territories to private companies through extraction titles and land appropriation, including river waters and subway currents. To achieve this, they have created licensing agencies, the first being the National Environmental Licensing Agency and the National Mining Agency. As a result, exploitation increased from 1.13 million hectares in 2002 to 8.53 million hectares in 2010. Consequences: - Disappearance of villages due to displacement to achieve land grabbing for mining. -The lack of respect for natural resources has contaminated rivers such as the Rancheria and has lowered the water level of the Arrollo Bruno, a tributary of the first, the disappearance of many streams due to the extraction of coal and natural gas, endangering the lives of people and animals. -The springs and groundwater are owned by private corporations, which use water resources indiscriminately, dCenying the possibility that nearby populations suffer from droughts. -The mortality of children is evident due to contamination and lack of water in the environment to satisfy primary needs. -Agriculture has disappeared, increasing poverty levels in these two departments. The greed of those who are responsible for the money coming from the extracted minerals destined to improve the environment of those who live in these places, does not allow the economic benefits to arrive.
